Our club is a great place to learn radio controlled flying for both fixed wing and helicopters. We have many seasoned pilots who also double as designated instructors and who would be glad to help out a newcomer in the hobby. They can give you advice on all aspects of the hobby. For your own sake (and your wallets) DON'T buy any equipment until you have talked to several experienced modelers. They should be able to give you some sound advice on aircraft and the equipment you will need to venture into the hobby of flying radio controlled aircraft.
